Creating Positive Dental Experiences for Anxious Kids

It is natural for the kids to feel slightly anxious when visiting the dentist. However, there exists a sensitive approach that, coupled with the proper techniques, can boost the kids’ confidence to face their dental fears with more positive experiences. The main thing is to make dental appointments something to feel happy about instead of something one fears. Fear of pain is one of the reasons children are scared to go to the dentist. Some hate the weird noises of equipment, the odd feeling of the tongue props, and strange tastes.

As a parent, you must clear all the child’s fears by telling what is happening in the clinic in simple and easy-to-understand language. Inform them about the images they could see and the sounds they would hear, and clarify that the dentist will never hurt them. During procedures, tell them to imagine a nice place, like their favourite park. Let the kids be introduced to dental books and teach the procedures’ basics. Letting kids acquainted with the dentist while they thoroughly check their teeth would empower them. Show them the kid-friendly amenities of the dental office, provided in the waiting rooms, like games for kids.

At check-ups, guide children to appropriately express feelings. Bring items that they consider cozy, such as stuffed animals or blankets. Playing music in the car will help them feel relaxed, too. Additionally, during the visit, encourage positive attitude, especially during the execution of the procedures. For example, during a cavity filling, keep on praising how brave your kid had been.

Many dentists calm anxious children using techniques that make kids feel more comfortable and in control. Some dentists’ offices have virtual reality goggles to visually engage the children somewhere else. As such, the children experience a boost in confidence because of the dentist’s encouragement.

By the use of anesthetics, sedation dentistry effectively relieves anxiety before procedures. Laughing gas is a form of mild sedation, while oral sedatives are therapeutic for deep sleep. IV sedation makes sure that the children feel no pain at all.

Through proper coping skills and making the visit as stress-free as possible, parents can empower their children to have a positive dental experience. Explain procedures, distract and comfort during appointments, offer toys, use music or videos, and provide cheerful moments to lift their little spirits. Please help them by being their cheerleader, and their fears will fade!
