Crowns & Bridges

Crowns (also known as caps), as well as bridges, are artificial teeth or appliances that are used to replace one or more missing teeth. They are made up of porcelain, gold or porcelain fused to metal. They are permanently cemented onto the broken or damaged teeth in order to replace it. If one tooth needs replacement, then a crown is used, for a consecutive number of teeth, a bridge is used.

A crown helps in adding on to the strength of the teeth. It provides the extra layer of durability to it. It is an important step of adding more strength to a broken tooth or the one that has undergone Root Canal treatment. The latter requires the protection of the soft pulp from any further damage, the crown or the cap provides that protection to it from external factors and also during chewing.
An impression of the teeth is taken before this procedure and the affected tooth is prepared firsthand to help it adjust to the crown that needs to be placed. The crown is then adequately shaped, and an impression of the crown and the bottom of the tooth is taken. The crown is then prepared in order to custom fit the affected tooth. In many occasions, an acrylic tooth is also placed atop the impacted teeth for temporary usage.
If you are replacing broken teeth or filling up the gaps in the jaw using a bridge, then this is also seen as cosmetic dentistry. The addition of a crown or bridge to fill up the gaps helps to improve your facial features and to bring the confident smile back to them.
